Feminist Approaches to Global Development
Module 001ID7
Module details for 2025/26.
30 credits
FHEQ Level 7 (Masters)
Module Outline
Can global development create a just world? This module tackles issues of global
(in)justice through an engagement with feminist frameworks and theories. We analyse
and challenge mainstream development approaches to gender justice by putting
current global events and lived experiences in conversation with decolonial, queer,
and intersectional feminist scholarship. We practice critical dialogue and debate
around questions of power and privilege in development work at the personal, local,
and global levels. We will build a collective toolkit for reframing solidarity and
accountability, learning from practices of everyday and organised resistance, and
transforming development frameworks in our community and beyond.
Module learning outcomes
Develop a sophisticated understanding and be able to critically discuss and debate feminist theories, concepts and interventions in relation to global development and justice
Develop the ability to draw linkages between global, local and everyday discourse and practices of development, resistance and transformation
Demonstrate ability and show originality in employing a feminist lens to understand different realities, and analyse development practice and policy.
Develop practical skills including critical thinking, essay writing, creative expression and literary analysis
