Module Outline
How do diverse groups experience the effects of development differently because of certain aspects
of their identity such as gender, race, and sexuality? The module will introduce students to a range of
concepts and frameworks that will allow them to identify, analyse and explain different forms of
gendered and racial inequality. The latter part of the course will show students how to apply this
knowledge in a range of practical contexts. Case studies may include activism tackling sexual and
gendered based violence, policies towards migration, and toolkits for addressing rising sexism and
racism online.
Module learning outcomes
Apply key concepts in the analysis of social relations between different
identity groups in different cultural, economic and political contexts.
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the main theoretical
perspectives and issues that has informed development thinking - and the
gendered and racialised impacts of this thinking.
Analyse different approaches to gender and race in development
theory, policy and practice with reference to concrete empirical
applications.
Apply these concepts and frameworks to issues of gendered and racial
justice.
