Module Outline
This module will provide students with a critical introduction to the vibrant field of economic geography.
It will involve learning about a range of different theoretical approaches and core concepts that help us
understand the geographic dimensions of the global economy and society. It will furnish students with a
background on the historical and contemporary processes that have shaped today’s global economy. It
will also provide students with the tools to interpret a range of pressing contemporary real-world issues
that link the ‘economic’ with the ‘geographic’, such as the governance of the global financial and
information technology sectors, global and regional inequality, international development, and
sustainability transitions
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate an understanding of a range of different theoretical
approaches within the field of economic geography
Explain how the unevenness in today’s global economy and society,
between different countries, regions and groups, has been produced
historically.
Demonstrate an understanding of how different places are shaped by
economic processes, and how governments have sought to manage
these processes
Apply economic geography concepts to interpret and analyse a range of
contemporary social, economic, and environmental challenges
