Module L2159S
Module details for 2026/27.
15 credits
FHEQ Level 5
Module Outline
This module introduces students to the knowledge, actors,
strategies and tactics deployed by policymakers and activists concerned with climate justice. Weeks 1-4 focus on
the relationship between knowledge production, communication and policymaking, and the role powerful actors
(states, corporations, investors) play in shaping climate policy. Weeks 5-7 examine the mechanisms used by
communities affected by climate change policies to seek redress for climate injustice (using human rights law,
compensation claims, and resistance to top-down climate policy). Weeks 8-11 examine the contested politics of
climate resistance, with a focus on alliances and tensions between activists in the North/South, and the racial and
gendered dimensions of climate activism.
Module learning outcomes
Understand, identify and assess the relationship between knowledge, power and
politics in dominant approaches to climate justice, activism and policymaking.
Undertake critical analysis of media coverage and public communication
pertaining to climate justice, activism and policy.
Develop collectively agreed pathways to achieving climate justice that take
account of global inequalities, and the success/failure of existing attempts to
achieve climate justice.
