The overall aim of the module is to鈥痓uild knowledge of children and young people鈥檚 lives in the context of their family lives.鈥� The module examines the concepts of 鈥榝amily鈥� and 鈥榝amily life鈥� 鈥� considering how we move from a 鈥榯hing-like鈥� understanding of family to a conceptualisation that recognises the dynamic fluidity and diversity of family structures and family practices. The module covers topics including family diversity; heteronormativity; historical and international perspectives; siblings, fathers and mothers; and the contribution of social inequalities and understandings of disadvantage for policy and practice concerned with parents and families.

Module learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of a family-practices conceptual framework to the role played by family, kinship relationships and care environments on children鈥檚 and young people鈥檚 lived experiences.
  • Critically evaluate key areas of policy and practice concerned with parents and/or families, addressing implications for children鈥檚 and young people鈥檚 lived experiences
  • Reflect on the value of critical comparison (over time and/or place) for understanding how family practices may be subject to change and continuity
  • Reflect on commonalities and differences between a variety of approaches to work with children, young people, and families.
  • Evaluate and communicate ideas and research findings effectively, clearly and fluently, drawing on a range of relevant sources, using written, oral or visual means, making effective use of ICT.
