Biography

I studied French and German at the 5X社区视频 of St. Andrews, with philosophy as a minor. Thereafter I took an M.A. in Continental Philosophy and completed my Ph.D on Hegel's Criticism of Kant at the 5X社区视频 of Essex. Afterwards I held a post-doctoral fellowship at the Freie Universitaet and studied ancient Greek at the Humboldt 5X社区视频 of Berlin. From 1995 to 2004 I was a lecturer in the philosophy department, teaching in Modern European philosophy at the 5X社区视频 of York, and was a core member of the School of Poliitics, Economics and Philosophy, before moving to Sussex in October 2004. Where I became part of the core faculty in Social and Political Thought and convenor in 2008 (and director of the Centre for Social and Political Thought) from 2009.

I have been a member of the Executive Committee of the British Philosophical Association from 2004-2012 and was Chair of the Society for European Philosophy until 2011. I am a member of the Programme Committee of  the Forum for European Philosophy, and campaign actively for the humanities and philosophy in Higher Education.
